Title:  Smart Cards in Healthcare - A Pilot Program

Session Focus/Summary:

The session will offer an overview of the business decisions and processes experienced by Saint Thomas Health Services (a division of Ascension Healthcare) in its project to implement a smart card program.  A demonstration of the smart card being used, and how it interacts with clinical systems, will be presented.

  1. Understand some of the realities (costs, barriers, politics) of deploying a smart card program in healthcare
  1. Describe the integration issues and opportunities with the banking industry
  1. Provide suggestions based on the pilot program for developing cross-industry opportunities


Biography:


Christopher Young is responsible for maintaining all existing technology as well as the selection and deployment of new technologies throughout the Southern Region. Prior to this, Mr. Young served as a Sr. Vice President of Management Resources responsible for implementation of operational synergies across the newly formed system.  Prior to this role, he functioned as the Interim-CIO responsible for turning around IT operations at St. Thomas Hospital.  He actively serves on multiple Ascension oversight committees.

Before joining St. Thomas Health Services, Mr. Young led emerging market development at Embark based in California.  In this capacity, he was responsible for entry into international and military clients.  He was also a private venture capitalist in multiple technology companies.  Mr. Young was the General Manager for East Coast operation for SVP America, a subsidiary of SAP AG and responsible for the foundation of the New York Office and all East Coast sales and consulting. Prior to that, Mr. Young was the founder of Young Consulting, a small privately held consulting and technology company based in Virginia. He was also a consultant with MECON and APM in the areas of healthcare operations, strategy and fast track technology implementations.

Mr. Young holds a degree in Economics from the University of Chicago and holds multiple technical certifications.
