Chair, CIO Executive Council™ Healthcare IT Taskforce

Title:  Leading CIOs Recommend ATM Approach for NHIN

Session Focus/Summary:

The CIO Executive Council™, a highly influential group of over 200 chief information officers (CIOs) at leading U.S. companies (founded by IDG's CXO Media and CIO magazine), has asked the federal government to play a key but limited role in the development of a National Health Information Network (NHIN). The Council is advocating that the private sector take a lead role in developing the NHIN model and operating guidelines - patterned after the ATM financial network - with the federal government taking responsibility for enforcing the resulting guidelines and creating financial incentives to accelerate adoption.

Learning Objectives at Conclusion of Session

  1. Why leading CIOs are recommending an ATM-style approach for our National Healthcare Information Network (NHIN)
  2. Major areas of concern for employers related to healthcare costs
