8:30 - 9:30 New Credit Risks in The Era of ARRA

A remarkable health care lending opportunity is evolving as ARRA and the HITECH Act take hold in the marketplace. As this occurs, banks will find increased exposure to health information technology (IT) assets, including significant implementation costs. While it is estimated that ARRA provides over $20 billion in government assistance for this new health care IT spend, implementation challenges around core systems are not uncommon and can potentially impact the solvency of health care organizations. The "era of ARRA" entails new credit risks for banks, other lenders and leasing companies. We'll examine the issues, get reaction from the audience and begin to work on a much needed industry tool kit that helps to provide guidance for the medical banking community.

Patricia B. Wise, RN, MS, MA, FHIMSS, Col., USA retired, Vice President, Health Information Systems, HIMSS, Chicago, IL

Presentation

9:30 - 10:30 Medical Banking Metrics

The data collected by HIMSS Analytics, representing over 5,100 hospitals, reveals that administrative systems will undergo significant transformation over the next 3-5 years. This could provide the background for changing well established business practices in patient accounting to bank-enabled revenue cycle solutions. A review of the data will help to create a clear strategy to engage this emerging opportunity. The session is followed by a discussion of metrics that need to be gathered in order to assess the state of the medical banking industry.

Michael Davis, Executive Vice President HIMSS Analytics, HIMSS, Chicago, IL

Presentation

The senior banker’s panel will take up this evolving area within the context of the global credit squeeze, discuss the current spend for specializing services into healthcare, the general areas where this spend is occurring (specialized lockbox, point of service payment processing, card programs, HSAs, etc), how banks are reacting to the complexity of this nascent marketplace and what future spending patterns might be.

Moderator: BP Fulmer, President Emeritus, Medical Banking Institute; Managing Partner, ExchangeEDI, Cartersville, GA
